Veolia's Racist Recruitment Advert In The Israeli Press
Veolia placed a newspaper advert in 2010 for operatives for its Jerusalem Light Railway project
The advert is in Hebrew; we have an English translation- (Down Load The Document to see the Hebrew Ad and The English Translation).
Veolia was clearly looking to exclude Palestinian citizens of Israel (often referred to as 'Israeli Arabs') -who make up approx. 20% of the population- from applying for the posts and/or being offered posts . The evidence for this are the twin requirements stated in the advert for Hebrew to mother tongue standard and past military/civic service.
Hebrew to mother tongue standard is a deliberate discriminatory hurdle; the advert could have asked for sufficient competence in Hebrew to operate trains but instead goes beyond this to send a message to would-be applicants about what racial/ethnic group is really being sought.
The requirement for past military/civic service standard is also deliberately discriminatory. Palestinian citizens of Israel are not called up to serve as conscripts in the Israeli Defence Forces - so could not meet Veolia's requirement. The civic service alternative is also discriminatory. Civic service is almost entirely managed by bodies that direct the giving of such service within Jewish communities only.

Letter To Ealing Council (London) To Exclude Veolia April 2011
This letter sets out the case against Veolia and the key paragraphs have been drafted by human rights lawyers working with PSC so as to minimise the ability of Councils to be able to dismiss the request to exclude Veolia. It is an example of the similar letters which other PSC branches and campaigners have used with their Local Authorities
